Breaston Parish Council News – November 2024
Perks Park Update
Memorial Benches – don’t forget there is still an opportunity to get involved with the Memorial bench project, anyone who is interested should contact the clerk. Research into the best way to mark distances on the path is still ongoing advice from the Park Run team has been sought and we await a response. Moving forward the provision of a more accessible entrance onto the site at Rectory Road is the next step and investigation of costs and how to fund the project will be made in the coming weeks.
We’ve been plagued again on the park by a graffiti artist, although the use of the word artist is a misnomer because Banksy they are not! If you see anyone carrying out vandalism such as this please report it to the Police, or let the Clerk know so that CCTV footage can be searched.
Breaston Cemetery Chapel – Update
The restoration of Breaston Cemetery Chapel continues at a pace, the wiring for the under-pew heaters and sockets has been installed and the new floor is well under way, decisions about whether the remaining funds will stretch to the provision of an accessible wc will be made in the coming weeks.
Highway Project Delays and Speedwatch Program Update
We are still awaiting the necessary licenses for the Objects in the Highway project from Derbyshire County Council. We are keen to get this project completed because neighbouring schemes have provided important data for the Community Speedwatch Team at Derbyshire Police.
Speedwatch sessions have been held on Longmoor Lane and Draycott Road on the 17th and 23rd of October respectively. During these sessions a total of, seven motorists were recorded traveling above the speed limit. Letters have been sent to the offenders by the Community Speedwatch Team at Derbyshire Constabulary. If you’re interested in getting involved please contact the clerk.
Watercourse Maintenance Progress and Ongoing Efforts
Watercourse maintenance remains a critical issue for our community, and we are actively lobbying landowners and authorities to address areas of concern within the Parish. Proper management of these watercourses is essential to prevent flooding and ensure effective water management. We encourage residents to also lobby the authorities more voices always helps. One such resident from Gregory Avenue has lobbied and organised a meeting with councillors and local MP Adam Thompson who we hope will be able to support residents and help us to pressure those landowners who are yet to carry out their riparian responsibilities. Derbyshire County Council’s S19 Flood Report has been published and a public consultation is ongoing until the 19th of December and can be found on the County Council website https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/council/have-your-say/consultation-search/consultation-details/section-19-flooding-investigation-consultation.aspx If you were affected by flooding please read the report and have your say.
Carers Support Session
The Parish Council have organised the first of what is hoped to be a regular session for residents who are carers for friends and loved ones. The session will be a chance to drop in and gather information or advice or just to have a chat and a cuppa. The first session will be attended by representatives of the Derbyshire Carer’s Association and Alzheimer’s Derbyshire. Please feel free to pop in for as long or as short a time as you like. Wednesday the 30th of October 2pm – 4pm in the Parish Rooms, Blind Lane, Breaston.
The Power of local volunteers A Massive Thank you!
We have a long list of people who we wish to thank this month!
- The Breaston in Bloom Painting team Julie & Peter who have done a magnificent job on the signpost on Duffield Close.
- The Pins, Hooks and Pom Pom’s Yarn Bombing team who have worked for the best part of the year creating thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies and leaves to create garlands to dress the lamp posts in the village. A massive thanks to Cllrs Elliott, Patrick, Salt & Mounsey who wrangled with the garlands and lampposts not as easy as you might think!
- A group of Severn Trent workers who volunteered as part of a scheme by the water company to thank the local community for their patience whilst work is being undertaken in the area. They sanded and painted the benches at the cemetery which were in need of some tlc.
From left to right: Kye Ettridge (STW Delivery Business Lead), Jordan Smith (STW Project Manager), Rob Stringer (STW Lead Project Manager), Harry Ennis (MWHT Assistant Quantity Surveyor ) & Maya MetcalF (MWHT Graduate Project Delivery Engineer).
