Update on Work at Former Westernmere School Site
The Parish Council was made aware of concerns regarding the ongoing work at the former Westernmere School site on Tuesday. In response, the Clerk immediately contacted the Flood Alleviation Team at Derbyshire County Council, the Environment Agency, and the Planning Team & Tree Officer at Erewash Borough Council.
That afternoon, Planning Officers attended the site to ensure that no protected trees or hedges were affected. Additionally, concerns about the state of the highway on Gregory Avenue were reported to the Highways Team at Derbyshire County Council on Wednesday morning.
For some time, both the Parish Council and local residents have been lobbying for ditch clearance work on the land north of the village. However, the photographs and videos circulating suggest that far more extensive clearance is taking place. In particular, the removal of hedgerows and its impact on livestock is a serious concern.
We have now written to the landowners requesting clarification on the nature of the work and will provide an update as soon as we receive further information from either the landowner or the relevant authorities.
We appreciate residents’ concerns and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
If you have any further concerns or information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
