Breaston May Day Gala

A great day out for the family

In 2002 Breaston held a Gala to commemorate  the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It was so well received by the people of Breaston that the Parish Council decided to make it an annual event  to provide entertainment for the residents of Breaston and the local area, their families and friends. It attracts a crowd of around 1,500 people each year.

The Gala comprises of a number of sites for private organisations' and charities' stalls. There is an annual dog show, an engineering society provides train rides and there are many children’s attractions. (Round-a-bouts, bouncy castle etc.)  These items are supported by a  variety of food outlets.

A central arena provides the space for a number of displays that run from the opening  at 11.00am until closing time at 4.00pm.  In the past these have included a young gymnast display team, marching bands, maypole dancing by local school children, a dog agility demonstration, line dancing, children’s races, tug of war competition and recently added Breaston’s Strongest Man & Woman events! An attempt is made to introduce something different on each occasion.  A  great effort is made to include as much ‘local’ participation as possible both in the arena and in supporting displays.

Plans for the 2020 Gala were organised to a theme for the 75th anniversary of VE Day a change from the usual format. Sadly in both 2020 and 2021 the event was cancelled due to the restrictions surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic. We were extremely thankful therefore, in 2022 when we were able to run the event altered from previous years with the theme a Celebration of the Queen’s 70th Jubilee with a nod to the VE Day celebrations thrown in. A marvellous turnout of people were treated to a great variety of entertainment and a wonderful day was had by all.

The Gala is non-profit making. It is run by a committee of willing volunteers and runs as a sub-committee of the Parish Council. We are always looking for new ideas and anyone can volunteer to be part of the Committee, please contact the Clerk for more information. clerk@breastonparishcouncil.gov.uk

2026

Huge thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the May Day Gala, despite the slightly chilly day we had a fabulous turnout. Your attendance and generous donations allow the event to be a great success.
Thanks to all the stallholders and attractions who we hope had a good day.
A special thanks to Dorothy and her team for another hugely successful dog show an extremely popular part of the event.
Big thank you to Richard for taking on the MC role he was brilliant and to Jonathan and Jean for opening the event in such style!
I think everyone will agree it was wonderful to see such a wide range of talented youngsters in the arena, from teeny tiny ballerinas and very young singers, to magnificent teenage displays of gymnastic prowess from the brilliant Dako Angels. Dancing, impromptu ribbon training and an utterly fabulous performance of Les Miserables... thank you all - without your efforts we wouldn't have an event.
A big thank you to Peter our site manager on the day who's ability to remain calm is remarkable 😇😇
Councillors, volunteers and our Maintenance Officer for marshaling and gate wrangling, David for sound control, thank you all.
Biggest thanks saved till last go to Cllr Patrick who did the lion's share of the organising, many hours of worrying about stalls, space and weather massive, massive thanks Lisa you're a hero 🦸‍♀️
