🌿 Breaston New Cemetery – Hedgework Update 🌿

You may have noticed that the box hedges separating Breaston Cemetery from the Erewash Borough Council side of the site have been removed in recent days.

The Parish Council has been monitoring the hedge for over two years following an infestation of box tree moth. Unfortunately, the damage caused by the caterpillars became too severe for the hedge to be saved, we did explore treatment options; however, these were very costly and not guaranteed to be effective.
As a result, it was resolved to:

  • Remove the affected hedge

  • Monitor the site to assess whether a hedge is still required

  • If replacement is deemed necessary, plant a new native species hedge

Native hedging is far more wildlife-friendly, helping to attract birds, insects, and pollinators, and providing flowers and berries that support biodiversity throughout the year.

Thank you for your understanding as we care for and improve this important community space.
